System Organizer Introduction

What is a System Organizer?

A system organizer is a person who helps you identify, document, fine tune, and maintain systems, processes, and personal habits that you use in your life, organization, and business. Organized systems allow you to get things done efficiently and reliably with a minimum of mental and process clutter.

What is the difference between cleaning up and organizing with regards to your systems? This is very much like the difference of cleaning up and decluttering your house. Cleaning up a mess has to be done over and over because the troubleshooting isn't addressing the root cause habits and disorganization that is causing the mess. Organizing maintains and updates your systems so they retain their efficiency and effectiveness.

What is a System?

System in this context is a building block that processes inputs to deliver outputs. It is the things you do, aided or unaided, to get things done and achieve the results you need. It is not necessarily a computer system. It could also be a wholely personal set of habits and procedures especially in the early stages. Most business systems are a hybrid of human processes and automated systems and can be composed of many interworking system building blocks.

As shown in Figure 1, a complex adaptive system interacts with a changing external environment that provides information to and receives information out. There are local relationships which can emerge with adaptive behavior through positive (amplifying) and negative (dampening) feedback controls

Why have Systems?

Actually whether you recognize it or not, systems of some description exist in your life and your real choice is whether you make do with what has been established perhaps unconsciously or by someone else, with systems that are tailored and maintained to do what you want.

I must create a system or be enslaved by another mans; I will not reason and compare: my business is to create.

- William Blake

Sam Carpenter has written a book, Work the System , that provides a excellent introduction to the system perspective that can be instrumental to your personal and business success. If you need to be convinced of the importance of systems to your life Sam's book is highly recommended.

Systems allow you to increase your power to achieve useful results in a replicable reliable way. You want systems to be working for you and when you are not getting the results you want it is helpful to recognize the systems involved and isolate what changes are required to achieve the desired results.
